Factory warranty ending? Here’s what to check.

Factory coverage is several separate warranties that end at different times. Here is how to see what is left on a specific vehicle and plan for what comes after.

Choose a vehicle for a personal timeline

Open this guide from a vehicle page or the coverage pop-up to see when each coverage ends for that car.

Verify before you buy

  1. Ask a franchised dealer for the make to run a warranty status lookup on the VIN. It shows the in-service date and every coverage still active.
  2. Confirm the in-service date on the history report. A car first sold late in its model year has more coverage left than this estimate.
  3. Check the second-owner rules in the booklet. Some brands shorten powertrain coverage for later owners or require transfer paperwork.
  4. Rule out anything that voids coverage: a salvage, rebuilt or flood title, commercial or rental use, or missing maintenance records.
  5. Ask for open recalls and prior warranty repairs. Recalls are fixed free whether or not a warranty remains.

When coverage ends: your options

  • A vehicle service contract for eligible repairs after factory coverage ends. Read the exclusions and the deductible.
  • A repair budget set aside each month instead of coverage.
  • Coverage you already have, such as longer powertrain, battery or corrosion terms shown above.
